Tag Heuer Carrera’s history
The first generation of the Carrera, the reference 2447, was launched at the Basel Fair in 1963. Created by Jack Heuer himself, it was introduced as an entirely new style of chronograph made specifically for professional drivers and car enthusiasts. Jack Heuer, the great great grandson of Edouard, took the reins of the company at 36 in 1958 and elevated the brand to an universal level.
In the 1970-1980s, the Swiss watchmaking industry went through a great amount of troubles. Due to the arrival of the new electronic movement, mechanical watchmaking was an extremely difficult position. The great pressure on the workers led to a turnover of 60-70%.
By 1982, the finances were under massive pressure and the bank already stepped in to say that they needed to be significantly more careful. The same year, Jack was pushed out of the company by his then CFO, who had made a background deal with a PHA group who would take over the business. They restructured the company and discontinued many iconic lines (including the Carrera) in order to focus on the new inexpensive pieces to compete with new market entrants like Swatch.
A decade later, the strong desire to strengthen the brand identity was finalized by the return of both the Carrera and Jack in 1996 at the Monza Grand Prix. This iconic style has stood the test of time, consistently selling as a top choice among collectors.

The inspiration behind the name Carrera is itself the subject of legend. The term “Carrera” comes from the Carrera Panamericana motor race, also known as the “Pan-Am”. This competition, held in Mexico, was born in 1950. It quickly became famous thanks to the involvement of the most prestigious manufacturers of the time: Ferrari, Lancia, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, etc.
In 1962 Jack Heuer attended the 12 Hours Race at Sebring in Florida, where he heard mention of the notorious, perilous Mexican race that took place in the 1950s. The elegant, dynamic name sparked Jack Heuer’s imagination. Heuer would share his thoughts on the Carrera name in his autobiography.
“I loved not only its sexy sound but also its multiple meanings – which include road, race, course and career. All very much Heuer territory.” Created in 1963, the eponymous collection made its triumphant entry into the market, never to leave.
Since 1963, there have been a lot of ups and downs for the Tag Heuer company and more specifically for the Carrera. First, in the 1990s we witnessed the great return of the Carrera : as we talked about previously, we travel back to a challenging time for the company and its reputation, which led to the departure of Jack Heuer from the family business.
In 1970, the second-generation of Two-Register Carreras was born. At the same time, the Carrera saw dozens of different variants, before the impact of the quartz technology took its toll and the Heuer brand began to suffer.
Jack Heuer stepped down from running its operations and in 1984, the Carrera collection was discontinued.
In 1996, eleven years after the acquisition of Heuer by TAG, the new Carrera was released. Inspired by the very first watch to display “Carrera” on the dial, it featured the same clean aesthetic that had made it so popular more than three decades earlier when it kickstarted the next chapter in the history of the chronograph.
More recently, three new references were launched for the 60th birthday of the Carrera : the Calibre 7 GMT “reverse panda” based on the Sellita SW300 and two new chronographs flyback with different takes.

Timeless looks and technical innovation

Regardless of the numerous collections like the Date, Porsche, Chronograph, Chronograph Sport, Sailing Complication and exceptional pieces, there still are some details that remain the same no matter which Carrera you choose to buy.
The earliest Heuer 2447N set the stage for the Carrera. As we'll see, Heuer would go on to produce variations of the Carrera, but many of the most recognizable elements – tension ring, angled lugs, black or silver dial – would carry through the manual-wind Carreras. For example, inside every watch, you always have a Valjoux 72 three-register chronograph with "Ed Heuer & Co." inscribed on the bridge.
You may not have noticed it but the not less famous Monaco V4 really looks like the ancestor of the Carrera in many ways we won’t explain here, but we encourage you to view it yourself.
Every Carrera watch, from the vintage models to the exclusives ones, offers unique features that stand out among luxury timepieces. Whether you're drawn to the blue dials or the elegance of silver, the Carrera will offer a style for everyone. Add your favorite model to your cart and enjoy free delivery on selected options.

1969 provided the debut for the first automatic chronograph Carrera. Before that, all Tag Heuer watches, including early Carrera models, relied on manual mechanisms to power their movements. Watchmakers painstakingly made complex chronograph designs that required regular winding by the men wearing them to maintain the watch's power reserve. While manual watches offered simplicity, they also demanded constant attention and care to ensure a correct functioning.
The introduction of automatic movements marked a turning point in the world of chronograph watchmaking. These innovations, featured in iconic collections like the Tag Heuer Carrera, used a rotor mechanism to harness the natural motion of the wearer's wrist, refilling the power reserve without the need for manual winding. This innovation provided users an enhanced convenience, redefining the balance between precision and ease of use.
This transition to automatic chronographs marked a significant evolution, offering convenience without compromising performance -the perfect reason why so many enthusiasts are willing to pay for this iconic timepiece.

Jack Heuer drew on his passion for modern architecture, design and motor sports to create the original Tag Heuer Carrera reference 2447 in 1963. 60 years later, functionality and readability are still at the heart of this serie made for tracks.

The Carrera’s designer learned about a new invention by a watch crystal manufacturer : an angled steel tension ring would hold the crystal in place against the case in a way that would increase water resistance. Jack had the idea of painting this tension ring and using it to show the 1/5 second demarcations leading to a simpler and cleaner dial, easier to read at high speed.
Indeed, as we saw previously, this watch is most known by drivers as they love to wear it on tours because of its easy reading.
The Carrera's role in motorsports

Let’s start with the collaboration with the Ferrari team : in 1971, Jack Heuer struck a deal with Scuderia Ferrari (by then CEO of the company) to provide time-keeping equipment. Their drivers started to wear Heuer watches at every race and the watchmaker began the first non-automotive brand to sponsor motor racing.
A surprising deal that placed Heuer at the center of the racing world and catapulted one of their Carrera (we’ll go into details in a moment) into a symbol of success. In fact, in 1971, every member of Ferrari’s Grand Prix Scuderia, with whom Heuer had signed on as Official Sponsor and Timekeeper, received a splendid gold Carrera engraved with his name.
Then came 1974 : two of the Ferrari drivers, Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni, quickly became ambassadors for the brand and sponsored. Many years later, the partnership continued to go on with Juan Manuel Fangio and Ayrton Senna as new ambassadors.
Of course we won’t forget Tag Heuer and Porsche : an alliance forged by innovation, officially made in 2021. While it’s by chance that the name ‘Carrera’ is central to both brands, their passion for technology and innovation is what made them destined for collaboration.
Two historic families, Edouard Heuer and the foundation of his brand in 1960 and Ferdinand Porsche, establishing the Porsche company in 1931. A few decades later, just like Jack Heuer, Ferry Porsche took over for his father in 1948.
Moreover, both names come from the legendary race in Mexico. 1963 is a huge year for both brands : it’s the launch year of the Carrera collection for Tag Heuer and the release of the iconic 911 for Porsche. The brands are reunited years later, still without an official union between them in the movie Ford v. Ferrari with Golfe and McQueen.
Finally, a collaboration between the two companies came out with a stunning watch we’ll talk about later.

In 1985, after Tag bought back Heuer, the brand became McLaren’s team sponsor. The following year, the Tag Heuer Formula 1 was launched and immediately tested and approved by McLaren drivers.
Nowadays, the iconic brand still sponsored many drivers from all teams like Alexander Rossi as well as Jean-Eric Vergne.

These partnerships not only highlighted the brand’s dedication to the race world but also positioned the Carrera as a top choice for professionals and enthusiasts alike. With the option to explore special collaborations and enjoy exclusive delivery deals, owning the best Carreras has never been easier.
Emblematic models in the Carrera collection
Two years ago, to celebrate six decades of the legendary Carrera collection, TAG Heuer launched several new models, starting with the TAG Heuer Carrera 160th Anniversary Limited Edition. The number of the limited edition – 1,860 of each version – is a nod to the year Edouard Heuer founded his watchmaking company in Switzerland. The anniversary watch was declined in three versions to celebrate the occasion : the Carrera Sport Chronographs, the Silver dial and the Montreal limited edition.
The Vintage Carrera collection features the Daytona chronograph (not to be confused with the Rolex Daytona), the Autavia introduced in 1962. Its name comes from the beginning of automobile and aviation, its two favorite occupations. To complete the collection, you must add the Monza and the Solunar watches, less known but complimentary with the others.
These models are perfect as a gift for collectors or those celebrating special milestones. Take advantage of free complimentary shipping when you pay for these masterpieces online.

One of the wonderful limited editions by Tag Heuer is with Japanese designer Hiroshi Fujiwara, founder of Fragment Design, which is a wbn 2447NT.

Since 1963, a lot of men have worn one of the iconic Carreras. We’re going to introduce you to a few of these men, some you must know.
He is probably THE most famous ambassador of Tag Heuer, the actor we no longer present, Ryan Gosling.
In collaboration with director David Leitch, he recently produced and made “The chase for Carrera”, a campaign where he plays the role of a thief in honor of the 60th anniversary of Carrera and the launch of the new Carrera “Glassbox” cbs.
Gosling also partnered with the watch brand in the famous movie The Fall guy during which he wears the automatic Chronograph 39mm cbs, a model inspired by the wbn 2447NS also known as the “panda” because of its dial.
He also wore a Carrera Date wbn pink dial matching his Gucci suit for Barbie's premiere in Hollywood that united no less than 90,000 spectators.
Still in the cinematic universe, you might see the cbs 7753SN called the "Ford v. Ferrari" Carrera instead. Indeed, Matt Damon can be seen wearing the chrono Heuer Carrera (silver panda dial and black counters on black leather strap) as Carroll Shelby in the movie Ford v Ferrari out in 2019.
In another register, Guy Berryman, also known as Coldplay bass player, owns the original 1968 Porsche 911 as well as a 160 years silver limited edition, and a Formula 1 Fujiwara Special Edition. He was proud to show it to the world in many photoshoots as for Says Who.
Years before him, another iconic musician, Mick Jagger is seen wearing a 1153 wbn that nowadays collectors refer to as, of course, the "Mick Jagger." Jagger's been spotted wearing several Heuers throughout the 70s, more often blue.

Thanks to his notoriety on the international stage and in motorsport, TAG Heuer appointed actor and racing fan Patrick Dempsey as a brand ambassador in 2014. To celebrate the release of the Tag Heuer x Porsche edition, the partners have joined with the famous Hollywood star. As a fervent ambassador of both brands, Dempsey loves the idea of this partnership.
“To see two iconic brands that I'm very close to and have worked with for years come together, and to see their collaboration, enthusiasm and passion - it's really great !”.
These ambassadors often showcase their favorite models, helping the Carrera maintain its position as a top-selling watch. Explore these models with complimentary online shipping and enjoy free delivery when adding them to your cart.
