One of the Planet Ocean’s most recognizable features is its design, which balances functionality with bold aesthetics. The watch is distinguished by its unidirectional dive bezel, large applied hour markers, and broad arrow hands, all optimized for legibility underwater. Early models became especially known for their use of bright orange accents, particularly on the bezel and numerals, which enhanced visibility and gave the watch a distinctive, energetic character. Like with all Omega dive watches, the helium escape valve at the 10 o’clock position allows trapped gas to safely escape during saturation diving. Over time, the Planet Ocean evolved alongside advances in materials and watchmaking technology. Omega introduced ceramic bezels using its proprietary Liquidmetal process, which bonded metal alloys to ceramic for exceptional durability and resistance to fading. Later generations expanded the lineup with ceramic cases, sapphire casebacks capable of withstanding extreme pressure, and movements certified as Master Chronometers. These movements offered superior resistance to magnetic fields, improved accuracy, and rigorous testing standards, reinforcing the Planet Ocean’s reputation as a technically elite dive watch.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW OMEGA PLANET OCEAN
Omega are not shy when it comes to releasing more variants of the same model. When they do decide to change things up a little, it is just that, only a little bit. Subtle changes and refinements to keep up with the times but very rarely would Omega perform a whole revamp of a watch model or line. Omega has released many new watches over the last year or so, however, none of their watches have experienced half the change the new Planet Ocean has. The new Planet Ocean has shown us that Omega is not afraid to switch things up completely and give us a brand-new watch with an all-new design. With it being so new, we thought it would be a great idea to go over all its new features, design and models available to purchase.
Starting off with a quick overview of the history of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean, it was introduced in 2005 as a modern interpretation of Omega’s long-standing dive watch heritage. While Omega had been producing professional diving watches since the late 1940s, the Planet Ocean was created to meet the needs of professional divers who would be working at great depths. It was positioned as a more robust and technically advanced companion to the classic Seamaster Diver 300M, offering greater depth capability and a stronger visual identity rooted in professional tool-watch design.
The creation of the Planet Ocean was driven by the growing demand for watches capable of withstanding deeper dives while remaining suitable for everyday wear. Omega engineered the watch to be water-resistant to 600 meters, far exceeding the needs of recreational divers and aligning it with serious professional use. This capability was achieved through a thicker case, reinforced gaskets, and a screw-down crown, all while maintaining wearability. The Planet Ocean also marked an important step in Omega’s broader strategy to emphasize mechanical innovation, as it prominently featured the brand’s Co-Axial escapement, a technology designed to improve long-term precision and reduce friction within the movement.
