EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE SEAMASTER DIVER 300M

One of the most iconic watches ever made, a profile so recognisable by its distinct features you could see it on someone's wrist from a kilometre away. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300m is probably their flagship model, it's the watch that put Omega on the centre stage within the watch community and one of the best models. Most often, it is referred to as the Rolex Submariner’s competitor since they are both two excellent diving watches at similar price points. The Omega Seamaster has an incredibly rich heritage and most will likely know the watch from the forever famous fictitious British spy agent, James Bond. However, it isn’t just a watch for secret agents, this watch is possibly one of the most aesthetic divers ever made that wears perfectly on the wrist. Today we are going over everything you need to know about their Omega Seamaster Diver 300.

Diver 300 old

The Omega Seamaster line was introduced in 1948 to commemorate Omega’s 100th anniversary of being a watchmaker. Originally designed as a robust and reliable timepiece for active individuals, the early Seamaster models drew inspiration from Omega’s watches used by British airmen during World War II. You can see where the diving aspect comes into play here as those fighting in the war would need a watch that could cope with every scenario. However, the modern interpretation of the Seamaster Diver 300, with its specific focus on diving, emerged several decades later which is the model you probably most recognize and can see today in 2024.

The beginnings of the Seamaster Diver collection

The Omega Seamaster Diver 300 was officially launched over 30 years ago back in 1993. This marked a significant milestone for Omega, as the watch was developed to cater to the growing demand for professional-grade dive watches and watch enthusiasts who preferred to wear a dive watch. The Diver 300 combined advanced technology with a sleek design, featuring a helium escape valve, unidirectional rotating bezel, and water resistance up to 300 metres (1,000 feet).

Omega was set on pioneering a watch that could work perfectly on the wrist when wearing a smart shirt and equally at home diving to depths of 300 metres to explore shipwrecks. However, professional divers were often working at these depths and put in chambers that were filled with helium, this posed a new challenge for watches as helium can get in smaller gaps than oxygen (we are of course talking about nanometres here!). This is why Omega developed the Seamaster to feature a mechanism destined to allow the helium to safely escape before it popped the watch crystal off.

This led to one of the defining features of the Seamaster Diver 300, the helium escape valve, an innovation crucial for deep-sea divers. This valve allows helium atoms to escape from the watch case during decompression, preventing damage to the watch. It has definitely become a controversial feature and like the English saying, ‘it’s like marmite, you either love it or hate it’. With a small crown-like looking part inserted at the 10 o’clock position it makes for an interesting off-symmetry balance. But, at the end of the day, Omega wanted the Seamaster to be a functional watch first and foremost so kept the design and it has been used ever since the first model.

The early models of the Seamaster Diver 300 were powered by the Omega 1109 automatic movement, later upgraded to the 1120 and eventually to the Co-Axial movements. The introduction of the Co-Axial escapement, developed by George Daniels and industrialised by Omega, significantly improved the movement’s accuracy and reduced the need for maintenance.

These new movements are not only COSC certified but METAS certified too, which essentially means no matter what you do with the watch or where you wear it, the Seamaster will hold up just fine and maintain its accuracy. Omega do their best to decorate the movement as beautifully as possible and thankfully you can see this as most of their watches feature a sapphire crystal case back allowing a full view of the movement. However, older models used to be offered in quartz, for those models and certain limited-edition ones Omega used their famous solid case back with the sea trident design on it.

It is very difficult to not talk about James Bond (AKA 007) when you talk about the Omega Seamaster 300 as this was his go-to watch for most of the films. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300 subsequently gained immense popularity through its association with the James Bond film franchise as it showcased the versatility of the watch. In 1995, with the release of "GoldenEye," actor Pierce Brosnan sported the Seamaster Diver 300, marking the beginning of a long-standing relationship between Omega and the fictional British spy. This partnership continued with subsequent Bond actors, including Daniel Craig, solidifying the watch's status as a symbol of sophistication and adventure.

Over the years, the Seamaster Diver 300 has seen numerous iterations, each improving upon its predecessor while retaining the core elements that define the watch. Modern versions feature Omega’s Master Chronometer certification and METAS certification, signifying the highest standards of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance. This means you can easily wear your watch in any scenario and you won’t need to worry about damaging the movement. In 2018, Omega released a refreshed version of the Seamaster Diver 300M, incorporating cutting-edge materials like ceramic and titanium. These models offer enhanced durability and a contemporary aesthetic, appealing to both diving professionals and watch enthusiasts. The use of different materials really helps diversify the Seamaster 300 collection and offers well over 40 models to choose from including chronograph noodles, two tone rose and yellow gold and multiple dial colours as well.

The bracelet is a classic and unique characteristic of the diver 300 however it has been controversial to say the least. With so many people having strong opinions about it being either fantastic or uncomfortable, it is still a solid and very well-made bracelet. With its 5 -link non-tapering style construction, it features a large stamped clasp with a twin trigger release system. This ensures the watch does not accidentally open up whilst you are wearing it but equally makes it a comfortably smooth process of opening and closing the clasp. The clasp itself has a glidelock style of adjustment along with a divers extension so you can wear this over a thick wetsuit and then after a few short seconds of adjustment later, you can wear it with a shirt to a restaurant. Their newest bracelet form is a metal mesh strap which is mega comfy, the only thing to watch out for is because it uses a fold over clasp, you have a lot of metal passing over each other so it can be quite thick compared to the normal bracelet and rubber strap.

Omega also now offers their well-made rubber strap with its classic tang buckle along with a new version that allows you to use an Omega deployment fold-over clasp. Unfortunately, you cannot use the tang buckle strap with e deployment clasp, however if having the option of both those in one strap is important to you then ZEALANDE have the perfect solution. ZEALANDE’s straps can work with both a tang buckle or be swapped out for a deployment clasp to give you the choice and freedom you like to meet your watch needs. Otherwise Omega also offers a huge variety of nylon nato straps to choose from and some even in leather. The diver 300 is such a versatile watch it is always great to have a few strap options to have a play around with and it looks excellent on rubber as it does on its original bracelet.

As far as key models go, the classic blue dial and bezel is their best-selling watch, it’s the one many of the Bond actors wore in the films and benign a dive watch and the colour of water benign blue, it makes a lot of sense. Coming in at a case size of 42mm and 13.7mm thick with a lug-to-lug of 50mm, it sits quite well on the wrist but for those with a wrist size of 6 inches or smaller may find it quite bulky to wear. The ceramic bezel and stainless-steel case with its sharp and flowing curved edges make it a visually one of the prettiest dive watches to look at. The date window at the 6 o’clock position helps to keep a nice symmetrical dial and with a touch of red on the tip of the second hand and writing of ‘Seamaster’ it really makes it a fun piece. It’s important to note that these specifications remain the same regardless of the dial or bezel colour, so you can choose your preferred model based on colour taste and not be compromising on anything.

Other popular diver 300 models include the classic black dial and black bezel, this should not be a surprise as it is one of the most versatile colours, very similar to this is their ceramic white dial and black bezel model. Very few diver watches exist in a white dial but Omega nailed it with this one and even include the chemical symbol for ceramic on the dial so you know what it is made out of. Potentially their most sought-after dial colour is their beautiful forest green dial and bezel, with it sometimes looking black in certain lights it really is a fantastic colour option too. They also offer a smoked grey dial as well as a brown/bronze coloured model that Daniel Craig himself helped design with Omega. They came out recently with a stunning Summer blue dial that goes from light blue in the centre to dark blue to the edge and even has blue luminescent hour makers, the idea behind the shade was if you were 300 metres below the surface of water and looked up, that is the shade of blue you would be able to see.
