Dubbed the “most counterfeited vintage watch”, its rugged yet refined aesthetic, combined with Tudor's renowned craftsmanship, has made it a must-have in the watchmaking world. But what really sets the Tudor Ranger apart? Why is it so popular and appreciated? This article looks at its history, design and modern appeal. Let's embark on a journey to discover everything there is to know about the Tudor Ranger.

History, Origins and Heritage

The origins of this collection date back to the middle of the 20th century, a period marked by a worldwide wave of exploration. Launched as part of Tudor's drive to create durable, accessible timepieces, the Ranger was inspired by its parent company, Rolex. While Rolex focused on luxury, Tudor aimed to satisfy those seeking robustness and affordability, without compromising on quality.

It was in fact Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, who took over the Tudor trademarks to form Montres Tudor in 1946. The aim was to place standard movements (i.e. ETA) in patented Rolex Oyster cases, thus creating a less expensive product for the mass market.

But let's get back to the watch we're interested in. The historical roots of this watch go back to 1929, when the Ranger name was officially registered by the brand. Despite this, it really begins in the 1950s, as the history of the Ranger is intrinsically linked to the legendary British North Greenland Expedition of 1952.

Although Tudor's Oyster Prince was the mission's official watch, the Ranger's design reflects the rugged requirements of such expeditions by continuing the concept of the expedition watch. Its sleek dial, rugged construction and versatile, practical and accessible design resonated with adventurers seeking reliability in extreme conditions.

At the same time, tool watches were becoming increasingly popular. Tudor understood the need for reliable watches that could withstand harsh environments, and the Ranger met exactly that need. It was a watch for those who dared to push the limits of exploration.

Over the years, the Tudor Ranger has undergone several transformations. Initially launched with a design reminiscent of country watches, the Ranger quickly gained a reputation for its utilitarian appeal. The main stages were as follows:

In the 1950s-1960s, early models featured a simplistic yet highly functional aesthetic, ideal for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. These watches were often equipped with manual-winding movements and minimalist dials, making them lightweight and reliable. These included the Oyster Prince ref 7808 (year 1952) model and the Oyster Prince Ranger ref 7995 (year 1965) model.

In the 70s, the Ranger evolved with modern touches, including variations in dial colors and strap options, notably in steel. The addition of date functions on certain models further broadened its appeal, such as the Prince Oysterdate Ranger II ref. 9111 (year 1973) model.

Between the years 1990-2000, there was a hiatus in production that led to an increase in demand for vintage Ranger, consolidating its status as a collector's watch. During this period, Tudor's reputation for creating robust watches continued to grow, and collectors sought out Rangers as symbols of authenticity and durability.

In 2022, Tudor reintroduces the Ranger to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British expedition to North Greenland, combining the vintage charm of the first models with modern technology with their Tudor T-FIT clasp system (a horizontal spring piece that slides over the inner clasp to provide up to 8 mm of adjustment). This reintroduction reaffirms Tudor's commitment to honoring its spirit of adventure and paying tribute to its historic roots.
