EVERYTHING YOU TO KNOW ABOUT THE OMEGA COMMANDER'S WATCH

The Omega Seamaster 300M is quite possibly one of the most iconic watches of all time with its distinct and unique helium escape valve at the ten o’clock position and the famous 5 link bracelet. Whilst Omega designed and built the Seamaster to be a professional dive watch and it is, however most people probably recognise and know this watch from its strong connection and ties to James Bond. Nothing says a watch is the ultimate go-anywhere-do-anything timepiece like having a famous MI6 agent James Bond wear it religiously through many of the films. Omega created the Commanders watch which is essentially your classic Seamaster with a nod to James Bond with its unique features. Today we are going over everything you need to know about the Omega Seamaster Commander’s watch.

A unique seamaster, the Seamaster commander's watch

Before looking into exactly what makes the Commander’s watch different and unique compared to the classic Seamaster, we first need to understand the history and origins of the Seamaster itself. Omega launched the Seamaster Diver 300 back in 1993 which marked a significant milestone for Omega, as the watch was designed and developed for professional-grade divers and watch enthusiasts who preferred to wear a dive watch. The Diver 300 combines a mixture of advanced technology with a sleek design with the famous helium escape valve, unidirectional rotating bezel, and water resistance of 300 metres (1,000 feet). Omega wanted to create a watch that could work perfectly on the wrist when wearing a smart outfit and then be worn equally at home diving to depths of 300 metres to explore the ocean depths. However, professional divers were often working at these depths and put in chambers that were filled with helium, this posed a new challenge for watches as helium can get in smaller gaps than oxygen. Hence, Omega developed the Seamaster to feature a mechanism destined to allow the helium to safely escape before it popped the watch crystal off.

It was because of this new challenge that led to one of the key defining features of the Seamaster Diver 300, the helium escape valve, being developed as an innovation crucial for deep-sea divers. This valve allows helium atoms to escape from the watch case during decompression, preventing damage to the watch. With a small crown-like looking part inserted at the 10 o’clock position it makes for an interesting off-symmetry balance. But, at the end of the day, Omega wanted the Seamaster to be a functional watch first and foremost so kept the design and it has been used ever since the first model. The early models of the Seamaster Diver 300 were powered by the Omega 1109 automatic movement, later upgraded to the 1120 and eventually to the Co-Axial movements. The introduction of the Co-Axial escapement, developed by George Daniels and industrialised by Omega, significantly improved the movement’s accuracy and reduced the need for maintenance.

These new movements are not only COSC certified but METAS certified too, which essentially means no matter what you do with the watch or where you wear it, the Seamaster will hold up just fine and maintain its accuracy. Omega do their best to decorate the movement as beautifully as possible and thankfully you can see this as most of their watches feature a sapphire crystal case back allowing a full view of the movement. However, older models used to be offered in quartz, for those models and certain limited-edition ones Omega used their famous solid case back with the sea trident design on it.

The Diver 300 is distinguished from the other models in the Seamaster line-up by its wave-patterned dial, skeleton hands, and robust stainless-steel case. The unidirectional bezel ensures precise measurement of dive times, and the lume-filled hour markers and hands enhance visibility underwater. The use of both blue and green lume makes it an interesting watch to stare at in the dark and the skeleton hands make it easier to see all the hour makers when in the dark.

Like with all Omega Seamasters. It is almost impossible not to mention the forever famous British spy, James Bond or 007. The Omega Seamaster Diver 300 subsequently gained immense popularity through its association with the James Bond film franchise as it showcased the versatility of the watch and proved how it could be worn in all sorts of scenarios. So, for those people watching the films and wanting a watch they could always wear every day without needing to know what they were going to be doing, the Seamaster 300 would be the one as it could do it all. In 1995, with the release of "GoldenEye," actor Pierce Brosnan sported the Seamaster Diver 300, marking the beginning of a long-standing relationship between Omega and the fictional British spy. This partnership continued with subsequent Bond actors, including Daniel Craig, solidifying the watch's status as a symbol of sophistication and adventure.

The Omega Seamaster Commander's watch is a timepiece that seamlessly blends the worlds of luxury watchmaking, maritime heritage, and cinematic history and was based on the perfect Omega model to do so. Released as a limited edition in 2017, this watch pays homage to Omega's long-standing connection with the British Royal Navy and its significant role in the James Bond film franchise.

Omega's association with the British Royal Navy dates back to World War II, when the brand supplied thousands of reliable and robust timepieces to the British military and Navy. The Seamaster line, which was first introduced in 1948, was designed with both water resistance and durability in mind, making it ideal for naval use. Over the decades, the Seamaster has evolved, but its connection to the sea and maritime activities remains strong, which you can also visibly see in its design language with the rotating dive bezel and dive watch extension clasp with ‘007’ engraved on it.

The Commander's watch, a tribute to James Bond

The Commander's watch specifically celebrates Omega's naval legacy and its role in the James Bond films, particularly honouring Bond's rank, which not many people know but he is in fact a Royal Navy Commander. Omega has been the official watch of James Bond since 1995, with the Seamaster frequently featured on Bond's wrist as he embarks on his globe-trotting adventures.

The Commander's Watch was released to commemorate three significant anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of "You Only Live Twice" (1967), the 40th anniversary of "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977), and the 20th anniversary of "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997)—all films where Bond holds the naval rank of Commander.

This is what really ties in the whole dive watch with a suit theme you so often see in the Bond films, he can go from a frantic boat chase to sipping a martini (shaken not stirred!) at a bar. That is why the watch Bond wears has to do it all, cope with diving and attending fancy events and what better watch to wear than an Omega Seamaster!

The Omega Seamaster Commander's Watch is a striking timepiece that captures the spirit of naval tradition with modern design elements. It features a 41mm stainless steel case with a unidirectional rotating bezel, highlighted by a bold blue ceramic insert with a diving scale in Liquidmetal. The bezel's red rubber covering from 0 to 15 minutes is a nod to the colour scheme often associated with the British Royal Navy and makes the watch different enough from your classic Seamaster 300 to clearly tell the difference. The dial is polished white ceramic, offering a clean and crisp contrast to the blue bezel making legibility that bit easier. The hands are skeletonized and coated in blue, while the second hand is tipped in red with a "007" gun logo at its base, adding a subtle Bond touch. The watch also includes a date window at 3 o'clock, with the number 7 highlighted in red as another homage to Bond's iconic agent number.

On the back, the case features a wave-patterned edge and a transparent sapphire crystal, through which the Omega Calibre 2507 movement is visible. This automatic movement is not only reliable but also beautifully decorated, showcasing Omega's commitment to excellence in both function and form. The rotor, shaped like the iconic Bond gun barrel, adds another layer of cinematic flair which again, for those who love the Bond films, is fantastic detail. There have been many different variations of the Omega Seamaster featured in the various Bond films over the decades and the sizes are quite different too. However, whilst the vintage ones have that smaller watch charm and historic origins, the modern-day Commanders watch features superior watch innovations and technologies which will hold up against the elements over time much better. This is particularly important to bear in mind if you are looking at getting a “Bond watch” to be your one watch you wear as the Commanders watch will be more durable compared to some of the vintage models.

The great thing about the Omega Seamaster Commander’s watch is that because it has a few different colours incorporated into its design, you can really have some fun when it comes to rubber strap colours. With it being a Seamaster 300M albeit with a slightly different spin, it is still a proper tool watch and as such it can be worn during any sporting activities too.

However, you might not want to risk scratching your original bracelet or you might want a comfier and sportier feel/look to your watch. ZEALANDE specialise in designing and creating the best rubber straps for Omega watches and with there being 10 different colours to choose from, you can really have some fun with thisi watch. You could easily put on a classic white or black strap for a cleaner look but equally, it would look fantastic with a red or orange colour to match and complement the dial colours.
