HOW DID ROLEX "BATMAN" GET THIS NAME?
Unlike almost any other watch brand, Rolex has successfully become so famous and their watches are so iconic they can be named by the public. Whether it's after a popular drink or a famous superhero everyone grew up watching, certain names have become synonymous with a specific Rolex watch. They usually get paired up depending on the key and unique traits of particular Rolex models and this is how they get their names.
One of the most well-known ones is the Rolex Batman, and it should come as no surprise at all that the Rolex model in question is one of their most iconic, the GMT Master II. That’s why today we are going over how the Rolex GMT Master II got the name “Batman” and why it is used to this day. We won't go into the history of the Batman, but only of the origin of its name.
GMT Master II, a rolex iconic watch
One of their most renowned items is the Rolex GMT Master II. It became well-known when Pan Am pilots wore it while wearing suits and boots, and soon after, everyone wanted one.
You may argue that the passion for this specific Rolex model is still fuelled by the fact that this watch became associated with the "glory" days of aviation.
The nickname "Batman" was not coined by Rolex itself but rather by fans and collectors, much like all the other nicknames you may have heard. In 2013, Rolex introduced a new GMT Master II reference 116710BLNR which was a huge stand-out piece for Rolex. This model featured a unique bezel with a black-and-blue colour scheme, a first for Rolex.

The striking two-tone Cerachrom ceramic bezel immediately caught everyone’s attention, and its colour combination reminded watch aficionados of Batman's iconic costume: a dark, brooding black paired with vibrant blue accents.
There are not many other famous superheroes or indeed other fictitious characters you can think of when it comes to a blue and black colour scheme. This made the name so very fitting and helped in this Rolex model having the nickname stick.

The Rolex GMT Master II "Batman" is loved for more than its nickname. Its technical specifications and aesthetic design reflect Rolex’s incredible level of craftsmanship and ability to surprise its audience with new designs. The black-and-blue bezel, made from scratch-resistant ceramic, allows wearers to track two time zones simultaneously and make it more legible doing so with a two-tone bezel. The 24-hour graduated scale is functional yet striking, with its vivid colours remaining vibrant even after years of wear.

Designed for travellers, the GMT Master II features an additional hour hand to indicate a second time zone. This practicality, combined with its robust build, makes it a favourite among globetrotters and workers operating in multiple time zones.
The watch is housed in a 40mm Oystersteel case, offering exceptional durability and a sleek appearance that works with any outfit for any occasion.
Early models came with an Oyster bracelet, while later versions, including the updated reference 126710BLNR in 2019, offered the choice of a Jubilee bracelet for added elegance. This model is sometimes referred to as the “Batgirl” but not everyone makes the distinction.
The "Batman" boasts Rolex’s cutting-edge Calibre 3285 movement, ensuring precise timekeeping, a 70-hour power reserve, and resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. All this makes for a watch that has been built to last the test of time and allows you to hand down the watch from generation to generation.
Rolex has a history of giving its GMT models distinctive designs, and many of them have earned nicknames. The "Pepsi" GMT, for example, features a red-and-blue bezel, while the "Root Beer" has a brown-and-gold bezel. Yet, the "Batman" has carved its niche due to its modern colour palette and innovative ceramic bezel.
It’s also the quietest one as the colours don’t jump out so if a subtle bit of colour is what you’re after then the Batman is the way to go. And again, if an even more elegant version is something you’re interested in then you’ve got the Jubilee bracelet option there as well.
This redesign further enhanced the watch’s elegance while retaining its sporty charm and the watch can slide perfectly under a cuff should you wish to wear it during more formal events.
